Witnessing the valiant attempts made by so many of my
directors in the past, I had a lot to go by when directing this
play. What I think no amateur director can ever escape is their
own mad visions of what the initially harmless concept could
become. Having never even participated in a musical, I had no
plan, and no intention of pushing my cast and crew as hard as
I have had to. I could never have done this without the support
of everyone involved.
First I would like to thank John Hanson for hours spent
dazedly increasing my knowledge of the 80s and discovering how
perfectly the concept fit. Josh Bilideou remained my right hand
with constant artistic and musical advice. Sarah Baurley, Jimmy
Brown, Kari Johnson, Rose Pawlowski and everyone else who helped
with music have worked their hardest to come together with my
actors, despite the difficulty of such a coordination. Thanks to
Tim and Rance for joining my directorial crew, and Nick for his
help with tech to watch lest my ambitions got the best of me.
Thanks to Wayne Renn and Scott from Harmony School for obtaining
a desperately sought drum set. Thanks to Teresa Wilbur for costuming
help and Kevin Horan for lending a hand near the end of the show.
A special thanks to Paul who thought he would be running sound for
a typically simple "Shakespeare in the Park!"
Last but most importantly, I want to thank my father, Larry
Vesely, who was given a weeks notice to write the music I needed;
who originally would have been solo on the keyboards and ended up
training additional musicians; who was cursed with a Gemini for a
daughter with the organizational skills of a wombat! Hugs and kissed
to Mom and Gena! Thank you to everyone who believed in my insane idea,
and to the board of MCCT who made it possible for me to make it real.
P.S. - Directorial Disclaimer: Please Read
Many characters in this play may seem to represent 1980s pop/rock
idols. This is not just a coincidence! Please don’t be offended by any
mistakes I have made in the costuming and/or characterizations of these
people. I have tried to do them justice, and am aware of any failures I
was responsible for.
