A Brief History of Monroe County Civic Theater, Inc. Monroe County Civic Theater, a not-for-profit community theater, aims to bring quality theater to Monroe County and surrounding areas and to provide experience in all aspects of theater production to all interested persons. The curtain rose on MCCT's first production on September 12, 1986. This is our twenty-first season, which began with our ninety-ninth production. Click here for a complete list of our productions. We have presented plays from many centuries; from Greek and Medieval plays to modern times, including Shakespeare, Molière, Racine, Tom Taylor, Gilbert and Sullivan, Checkov, Shaw, Wilde, Ibsen, Coward, Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, Sondheim and ten children's plays. We have performed at the John Waldron Arts Cetner, the Playwrights Project Theater, Harmony School (outdoors and indoors), Karst Farm Park, the Monroe County Public Library Auditorium, the Monroe County Historical Society Museum, Rhino's, the Irish Lion, and various schools and health care centers in Monroe County, and have recently branched out to perform in Spencer as well. We currently plan about six productions a year. Information on auditions, upcoming productions, and board meetings can be found by visiting our News page on this website. Come join us! Shakespeare in the Park Perhaps we are best known for Shakespeare in the Park. We began with three plays outdoors at Harmony School and moved to the stage in Third Street park when it was built. We have presented two Shakespeare plays each summer for a total of 22 plays in 28 productions. 2007's offerings were "Antony and Cleopatra" in June and "Romeo and Juliet" in September. In 2008 we will present "The Tempest" in June and a play to be announced in September. Join us each summer for both classic and unusual Shakespeare productions under the stars!
Directors' Forum Monroe County Civic Theater's "New Directors' Forum" (later known as the Directors' Symposium) began in 1996 as a means of introducing local talent to the art and business of theatre production. Through the medium of one-act plays, it allows people to experiment, act, direct, produce and basically "get their feet wet." An increasing number of the plays are new, locally written pieces, adding yet another level to the learning experience. The forum is held each year in the spring. Monroe County Civic welcomes and encourages members of the community with an interest in theatre to join us in this, and our other productions. Information on auditions, upcoming productions, and board meetings can be found by visiting our Events Calendar. In 2007 we featured five selections. "Solemn Solitude" by Russell McGee, directed by Pat Anderson, unites workers trapped in an office elevator. "Love and Hitchcock" by Derrick Krober, directed by Bill Goveia, that honors the great filmmaker through the murderous deceit of husband and wife. "Freedom Isn't Free" by Holly McClane, directed by Lauren Steffen, depicts a game show where contestants battle for the chance of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. "The 100th Show" by Phillip Addison, directed by Caitlin Moroney, tells the story of a community theatre board of directors choosing their one-hundredth production. "Busu, the Magic Poison" is a Japanese play of unknown authorship directed by Janice Clevenger in which two servants raid the sugar bowl while their master is away. Please see our Completed Works for details.
Dinner Theatre In late 2005, we began an exciting new series of productions upstairs at the Irish Lion with Frankenstein at Halloween and A Christmas Carol in December. The dinner theatre series is now entering its fourth year and is expanding to new venues such as Max's Place in Bloomington and the Hilltop Restaurant in Spencer. In 2007 we will be featuring "Social Circles" by Ben Aldred, in late February and early March; "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" at Halloween; and the third annual production of "A Christmas Carol" at Christmas.
