What kind of shows does MCCT put on?
We have presented plays from many time periods ranging from Greek and Medieval plays to modern times. These include plays by Euripides, Shakespeare, Moline, Racine, Tom Taylor, Gilbert and Sullivan, Checkov, Shaw, Wilde, Ibsen, Coward, Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, and Sondheim, as well as Medieval farces and Japanese kyogen.
Perhaps our best-known productions, however, come from our Shakespeare in the Park series. We began this in August 1990 with a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream performed at Harmony School's outdoor stage. The series moved to the Third Street Park outdoor stage in 1992, and we have performed two plays by Shakespeare every summer since.
We are also proud to be able to give new directors and playwrights a chance to practice their crafts. In 1996 we began our New Directors' Symposium series as a means of introducing local talent to the art and business of theatre production. Through the medium of one-act plays, it allows people to experiment, act, direct, produce and basically "get their feet wet." An increasing number of the plays are new, locally written pieces, adding yet another level to the learning experience.
The forum is held each year in the spring. Monroe County Civic welcomes and encourages members of the community with an interest in theatre to join us in this, and our other productions. Information on auditions, upcoming productions, and board meetings can be found by visiting our Events Calendar.
When and where are MCCT's next auditions?
Auditions are listed on our Events Calendar as soon as they are scheduled. We also offer a mailing list specifically for audition announcements if you would like to be notified of upcoming auditions by e-mail. To sign up, send a message to info@mcct.org requesting to be added to the auditions list. You may unsubscribe at any time by sending a request to the same address.
When are MCCT's shows?
We have two regular series: the Directors' Symposium and Shakespeare in the Park. The Directors' Symposium occurs every March; Shakespeare in the Park usually falls in the months of June and September. We also often have a show in January, a show later in the fall, and others in the spring and/or summer. Production dates vary from year to year, so we recommend that you watch our Events Calendar for information on upcoming performances.
Where does MCCT perform?
We do not own a building in which to perform. Therefore, we perform at a variety of venues around Bloomington. Currently, we are most often in the Rose Firebay at the John Waldron Arts Center or on the outdoor stage at Third Street park. We have also performed at the Bloomington Playwrights Project, Monroe County Public Library, Second Story, Rhino's All Ages Club, the Monroe County Fall Festival, Bryan Park, the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, and various schools in Bloomington.
You can find information about our most common venues and directions to them in the Venues section.
Who can audition for MCCT shows?
We welcome anyone who wishes to audition for any of our shows. We do not require a resume; in fact, we do not require any experience at all. We also invite children to audition if they are so inclined; there will often be parts they can fill, and they are a welcome part of our productions. Occasionally we even have parts for pets.
Can I be involved in MCCT without being onstage?
Yes! Actors are only one part of a production. There are many other things to be done, such as directing, stage work, stage management, set design and construction, costume design and production, lighting, sound, and publicity. We also welcome local playwrights to submit their work as a possible addition to our season or as a part of the New Directors' Symposium. To get involved, e-mail us at info@mcct.org or contact us by phone or postal mail as listed on our contact page. We are always happy to have volunteers.
