Directors' Symposium XV
Bloomington Playwrights Project
7:30pm, September 9, 10, and 11, 2010
This year's Symposium includes a combination of local talent and adapted classics. We have two plays by Bloomington playwrights. Jean Stinson's "Grandma Magic" plays out the forming of a new relationship that grows out of the guilt of a young woman and the loneliness of an old woman. Prince Butler's "Penguins in the Mist" takes a brief (comic) look at the lives of male penguins waiting for their mates to return. We are also showcasing three works that are not seen often. The first is the dramatized reading of a Radio Play about an Iraqi War veteran's return home. This 1944 Radio Play originally referenced World War II, but has been revised and updated by the author Norman Corwin along with Richard Fish. Our last two offerings are two-character entanglements and confrontations. The final scene from Maxwell Anderson's "Mary of Scotland" takes place in the prison in which Queen Mary is being held by Queen Elizabeth. Their first, and last, meeting. Sometime later, Queen Mary is beheaded. On a lighter (?) note, Anton Chekhov's intense short, two-character "The Swan Song" involves an aging comedian/actor and his prompter as they reminisce about, and relive, scenes from the actor's life. Tickets will be $12 general admission or $9 for students and seniors at the door, with presales at a $2 discount available from cast members and from Bloomingfoods East and Near West locations.
